Prepare Your Roof for Severe Summer Weather
If this Ohio summer is anything like last year’s, we have some storms on the horizon. Get your roof ready to withstand this summer’s weather.
High temperatures, hailstorms and strong winds are just some of the severe weather conditions your roof typically endures during a typical Ohio summer, and all that weather can play havoc with your roof.
There’s nothing worse than dealing with the consequences of roof damages; they can be costly and detrimental to your home’s efficiency. In 2015 alone properties across the Buckeye State experienced $37.62 million in property damage due to hazardous weather related causes. With the right seasonal maintenance you can not only help to prevent severe roof damage, but also improve your roof’s lifespan.
Preparation
Before summer storms arrive, inspect your roof for any outstanding damage that needs repaired before sever summer weather hits. For example, you want to look for severely blistered, curled or missing shingles, not to mention heavy debris on the roof. Also, be sure that the flashing around your chimney, roof vents, skylights, dormers or roof valleys are secure too.
Equally important is to clean out your gutters so that water can flow freely. Debris-filled gutters can cause water to back up and run into your attic, your walls or pool around your foundation and cause structural damage.
Remove any tree limbs or branches that may have fallen onto your roof, and trim back branches and limbs that are growing over your home. Tree branches can be very heavy and cause severe damage if they land on a roof during a storm.
Finally, be sure to check your roof from the inside by going into the attic and looking for water damage, as well as moisture. Excessive moisture in the sub-roof and attic will result in mold and mildew that can impact your family’s health and your home’s structure. Proper ventilation will help to fix the problem.
Post Storm
During a safe time soon after a storm, check your roof for damages and fallen debris. If there are damages, assess them promptly and call a roofing professional immediately. Since hail damage is often not immediately apparent, it is critical to call in a professional if you suspect any damage.
